ELLIS Unit Madrid is pleased to announce that two of its member universities, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Universidad de Alcalá, have been admitted as new ELIAS nodes, further strengthening Madrid’s presence in the European ecosystem of sustainable and trustworthy artificial intelligence.
Through this recognition, both institutions become part of the ELIAS (European Lighthouse of AI for Sustainability) project, a growing European network that brings together leading research centres, universities and innovation actors committed to advancing AI research with a strong focus on sustainability, scientific excellence and societal impact. Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Universidad de Alcalá join fifteen other institutions admitted in this call, contributing to the expansion of a Europe-wide research network designed to foster collaboration, innovation and responsible AI development.
This milestone reinforces the role of ELLIS Unit Madrid as a key hub for machine learning and artificial intelligence research in Spain and Europe. The participation of two of its universities in the ELIAS Alliance will create new opportunities for collaboration across institutions, disciplines and countries, supporting the development of AI methods and applications aligned with European values and long-term sustainability goals.
For ELLIS Unit Madrid, this achievement reflects the strength of its multi-university model and its commitment to building bridges between cutting-edge AI research, education, innovation and societal needs. By joining the ELIAS project, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Universidad de Alcalá will contribute to shaping a European AI landscape that is not only scientifically ambitious, but also sustainable, trustworthy and socially responsible.
