From 7 to 9 October, ELLIS Unit Madrid took part in the 3rd ELLIS Coordinators’ Retreat, held in Warsaw and hosted by ELLIS Unit Warsaw. The event brought together coordinators and representatives from across the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems for three days of exchange, discussion and collaboration.
ELLIS Unit Madrid was represented by its coordinator, Patricia Tablado, who joined colleagues from different ELLIS units to share experiences and reflect on the work that supports international AI research collaboration. The retreat provided a valuable space to discuss common challenges, exchange good practices and explore ways to strengthen coordination across the ELLIS network.

Throughout the meeting, participants addressed key aspects of building and sustaining a strong European AI ecosystem, including how to support researchers, foster collaboration between institutions, improve organisational processes and create stronger links between science, innovation and industry.
A particularly valuable part of the programme took place on the second day, when coordinators from Polish AI research institutions joined the retreat for workshops and discussions. Their participation opened new opportunities for dialogue and helped build closer connections between Poland’s AI research community and the wider ELLIS network.

For ELLIS Unit Madrid, participating in this retreat was an opportunity to reinforce its commitment to European cooperation in artificial intelligence and to continue learning from the experience of other units. Meetings like this play an important role in strengthening the links that make international research collaboration possible.
We would like to thank ELLIS Unit Warsaw for hosting such a fruitful and inspiring meeting, as well as all participants, speakers and workshop leaders for their openness, ideas and energy. The conversations and connections built in Warsaw will continue well beyond the retreat.
The event was organised by ELLIS Unit Warsaw, whose main host is the IDEAS Research Institute, with Warsaw University of Technology and the University of Warsaw as co-hosts. The retreat was organised as part of the “AI x Science Connect Poland” initiative, funded by the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Poland. The event was also held under the Honorary Patronage of the Mayor of the Capital City of Warsaw.
