The ELLIS Unit Madrid took part in the 2025 edition of the Machine Learning Summer School (MLSS), held this year at the Universidad Católica San Pablo in Arequipa, Peru from 2nd-13th August. Continuing the long-standing MLSS tradition of bringing together leading researchers and students from around the world, the event offered an intensive programme of lectures, workshops, and hands-on sessions across a wide range of machine learning topics. Members of the ELLIS Unit Madrid such as professor Pablo Martínez Olmos, contributed actively to the scientific programme as part of the organising committee, through poster presentations, and by giving several invited talks.
Among the contributions from our researchers were sessions on Bayesian functions, introductions to Gaussian processes, lab sessions dedicated to practical aspects of Gaussian process modelling, discussions on uncertainty in large language models, and lectures on probabilistic modelling of cell types. Additional sessions covered diffusion language models, reinforcement learning, and advanced topics such as dealing with spatial and temporal structure in machine learning problems. Their participation reflects the Unit’s commitment to advancing AI research and strengthening international collaboration within the ELLIS network.
